The Bridgehampton Lions Carving Contest will be held on Monday, October 24th starting @5pm. If you’re not coming for the puppet show then definitely get there well before it’s dark and if your not familiar with the event, there’s no actual carving going on at the event, you have to spend the weekend doing that!
This is our 24th contest with 7 new themed categories – please see the current poster below.
12 and under freestyle is now 13 and under. We removed the all ages freestyle category and will award 3 prizes for Master Blade. Any entry qualifies for the Master Blade 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place awards – If you, enter in any of the themed categories, enter in the 13 and under freestyle, or set up on the event grounds but outside of a category, you will be considered for the Master Blade prizes.
We’ve noticed folks trying to use glow sticks to illuminate their pumpkins but they don’t give off enough light and the judging happens in the dark so if you are planning to use glow sticks plan to use a few candles too – glow matters.
Check out the poster below and links to the carving galleries on the left of this site if you need some motivation besides all the prize money… remember it’s FREE to enter and FREE to see but you can’t win unless you bring a carved pumpkin or squash-like life form. Also, many tend to forget about the categories… if you carve to fit a category you will be more likely to win… pick your favorite or if you can’t decide carve 3, you can enter in up to 3 categries! Sometimes a category has just a few entries so there may be a guaranteed win in your future if you make the effort.
If you are a sponsor looking to pay online or would like to make a general donation, see the link to the left or CLICK HERE.

Well, it was very exciting to watch the Instagram hashtag feed Sunday night when all your entries started coming in. We did not expect all the interesting ideas and story telling in many of the entries. If you have not seen them please go to #icarvedfor_bhlions and look through all the images in each. It’s not the quantity of entries we are used to but the quality of the concepts reminds me of our very first contest 24 years ago. It was a similar cautious turnout with ideas no one had seen before in pumpkin carving – so thank you for braving this new territory with us!
That said, we still love our original community event, and hopefully next year, we will be back – with a few twists!
So you want to know who won but you probably already peaked below.
Congratulations to all the winners! Because all were so interesting we posted them below with the winners. These single images do not do them justice so I would recommend a look at #icarvedfor_bhlions if you haven’t already done so. Winners will be contacted shortly via direct messaging on instagram.
And, we can’t mention winners without mentioning all our dedicated sponsors who supported us, even in these strange times! Without them we would have no prizes or an event for that mater! Please see the list of award and event sponsors below.

For the safety of the community, we have decided to go virtual for our annual carving contest – mostly because we cannot predict turnout or control the crowd sizes this year.
We will still hold the contest over the weekend of October 24th & 25th BUT via Instagram.
Cash awards will be the same as previously indicated – 10 – $100 awards and $200 extra for the Master Blade nominee.
There is no fee to enter and there are no age limits.
So, We are Still “Glowing On” but Virtually!
Here’s how to enter:
Post your carving as a separate Instagram post on your Instagram account and include the hashtag #icarvedfor_bhlions .
Your entry must be carved the week of the event ( 9/19/20 – 9/25/20 ) and by you. You will need to provide a second photo with the cover of a current local paper in front or with your carving to prove this. Details below.
One entry per post, enter up to 3x per Instagram account / person.
Remember, post your entry with the hashtag #icarvedfor_bhlions to be included with all the other entries.
IMPORTANT NOTE forPRIVATE ACCOUNTS: Tags ( #icarvedfor_bhlions ) from private accounts will not show up on the public results page unless you make your account public til Halloween or send from a public account. The posts must be public to be seen and qualify for the contest. If you cannot send publicly please DM @bhlions the images before the deadline and we will try and post them for you. If the images are not edited or in a proper format for posting on Instagram we will not be able to do this in time to qualify for the awards.
Posts should include the following.
– Image 1 should be of your carved pumpkin, gourd or squash-like life form lit at twilight or when dark/light enough so we can see both the carving and the glow. Most decisions will be based on your first image but judges will look at all additional images too.
– Image quality should be good and focused well to be considered.
– You may include any additional images you feel are necessary after the first image on your post.
– There must be, at least, 1 image that shows the cover of one of these local papers next to your carvingor something proving you are the carver and that it was carved recently. The issue should be from the week of the event ( circulating the weekend of October 24th & 25th, 2020 ). Qualifying Papers: East Hampton Star, Southampton Press & Sag Harbor Express. A photo of yourself with the carving may also be OK.
Entries must be posted between Thursday October 22nd and Sunday October 25th by Midnight.
Winners will be notified by Instagram Direct Messaging within 2 days following the Sunday, Midnight deadline. The message will come from the @bhlions account.
Winners will also be asked to provide their entry images ASAP and before collecting prize money so that we can repost them on our Instagram account by Halloween.
All winners will be posted @bhlions before Halloween night!

Presenting… the poster for the 20th Annual Bridgehampton Lions Carving Contest on Monday, October 29th starting @5pm! We’re not talking turkey carving, although I suppose you could carve a turkey too. If you’re not coming for the puppet show then definitely get there well before it’s dark and if your not familiar with the event, there’s no actual carving going on, you have to spend the weekend before doing that.
To commemorate the past 19 years we are bringing back many of our favorite retired categories. Do you remember Dentist’s Dream? It was a favorite from 2000-2005 and Classic Jack is the only category to make all 20 Events. Check out the poster below and links to the carving galleries on the left of this site if you need some motivation besides all the prize money… remember it’s FREE to enter and FREE to see but you can’t win the cash unless you bring a carved pumpkin or squash-like life form.
